Chapter 27

Jealousy

‘I just thought it’s the holidays and I have time off. It would be nice to spend them together.’ Sally’s voice sounded hollow through the long distance call or was it that she seemed whiney and needy.

Christian gripped the phone hard and felt his impatience building. It was not like Sally to call him and suggest a visit to Italy. She knew her place and that had always been one of compliance and waiting at his convenience. What had brought this on? He needed to find out and stop this behavior before it got out of hand.

Softly, chillingly he spoke, ‘Why have you phoned me Sally? This is not how we usually conduct ourselves.’

He could tell by her quick intake of breath, she knew immediately she had crossed a line. Hesitantly she said, ‘It’s a time to be with ... friends. I thought you might like some company.’

‘The holidays mean nothing to me. My life continues as usual and I try my best to ignore the absurd festivities that surround me.’ He waited. He could feel she wanted to say more, but was afraid.

Courage building, she began slowly, ‘I heard many of the European stars who appeared at Cannes will be attending the Christmas Extravaganza in Rome. A particular highlight will be the French actress we met that night, Juliette Dupree. She’s making quite a name for herself.’

So that was it. Sally was more observant than he gave her credit for. He hadn’t realized his interest in Juliette had been noted that night. Sally misunderstood of course. On the night of the Cannes Film Festival, he had been assessing many of the young and upcoming actresses to be the special one to join his wall of kills; but he was surprised and disappointed with himself that Sally had noticed his curiosity. Never underestimate a woman in love.

‘I have no desire to attend anything like that and I especially have no interest in mixing with movie people. I took you to the awards in Cannes because I thought you would enjoy them.’

‘I did. It was a marvelous night,’ Sally broke in quickly.

‘Rest assured Sally, I will not be attending this affair in Rome. I get more intellectual stimulation from the local library. Plus, why would I mix with empty headed starlets when I already have a woman of beauty and acumen in my life.’ He could almost feel her melting over the phone line.

‘Oh, Christian,’ she gave a soft laugh. ‘I’ll leave you to enjoy your Italian adventure then. Call me anytime. Goodbye.’

The lightness had returned to her voice. He felt as though he had averted a potential problem, yet the break in her usual behavior still bothered him.

He picked up the phone again and dialed. ‘Juliette, I’m calling to thank you for the invitation to the Extravaganza. You understand however, I prefer to remain in the background and allow my protégé to shine.’

‘But Monsieur Sorrento – Christian – you have been the person most instrumental in the progress of my career,’ Juliette answered.
